DAZL Annual Review 2015-16 Please click here to download the PDF Annual Review in full – DAZL Annual Review 1516     Some initial stats from our annual review 2015-16 • In 2015-16 we worked with 4202 young people, 77% were girls of which 1760 took part in live performance opportunities • In 2015-16 we worked with 953 boys they made up 23% of our overall activity, 698 took part in at least one performance • In 2015-16 we deliver 37 schools dance provision engaging 2518 young people • In 2015-16 DAZL participants took part in 81 performances/ events, 13 of these were non Leeds based allowing the young people to gain experiences regionally and nationally. • In 2015-16 of the 4202 young people who engaged in the DAZL program 2488 where inactive doing less than 1 hour of physical activity beyond the school day per week, excluding the DAZL session. Annual Public Health Excellence Awards The DAZL Director Ian Rodley with Public Health Minister MP Jane Ellison been recognised for ‪Excellence In Public Health‬ at the Annual celebration event in Westminster, London. DAZL strongly belives that its wonderful how dance can be at the forefront of improving the populations physical and mental health, reducing health inequalities and supporting rehabilitation of falls, this list could go on and on.   Professor Kevin Fenton and Health & Well-being Leader at Public Health England and Jan Burkhardt – Leeds Public Health/ Dance & Health Specialist and Founder of DAZL both stated that dance‬ is a fantastic way of improving the populations physical & mental health and well-being and DAZL’s work is an innovative way of doing this.   Ian was nominated by Dr Ian Cameron – Director of Public Health, Leeds City Council stating “Ian;s passion and commitment is above and beyond. Community committee DAZL Gets Inner East Community Committee Funding Support 2016-17 DAZL receives funding from Inner East Community Committee to support our Inner East Program and a new session in Seacroft. The aim of the program is to improve physical activity, health and well-being in children and young people from Inner East Leeds.   Weekly program DAZL Xplode at Kentmeare Community Centre, Seacroft – 5-6pm every Tuesday (6-11years) £1 per class (Fun Streetdance class) DAZL Inspire at Dame Waterman Centre, Gipton – 5-6pm every Tuesdays (3-6yrs & 7-11yrs) £2 per class (Hip-Hop Competition Teams) DAZL Xplode at Richmond Hill Community Centre, Burmantofts – 5-6pm every Tuesday (6 -12years) £FREE Class (Fun Urban Dance Class) DAZL Inspire at Ebor Gardens Community Centre, Burmantofts – 4.30pm-6pm every Wednesdays (9-16yrs & Adults 18+) £2 per class (Hip-Hop Competition Team) DAZL Xplode at Denis Healey Community Centre, Seacroft – 4.30-5.30pm every Thursday (6-11years) £FREE class (Fun Urban Dance Class) DAZL Inspire at Dame Waterman Centre, Gipton – 4.30-6.30pm every Fridays (3-6yrs & 7-11yrs & 11-17years) £2 per class (Cheerdance Technique & Cheerdance Competition Teams) The Groups will meet weekly but also have the opportunity to take part in a summer intensive project. The projects are aimed at young people aged 6-17 years across Inner East Leeds and will be performing in the many local galas this summer including -Burmantofts, Seacroft and Lark In The Park Galas. DAZL – VINE Inclusive Cheerdance at Northern Ballets #Expressions16

DAZL – VINE Inclusive Cheerdance at Northern Ballets #Expressions16 The young disabled adults who DAZL work with weekly had the chance to perform at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Theatre part of Northern Ballets Expressions 2016. The learners who attend the Vine education service were joined by other inclusive dance companies from across the country. Vine is an education service for young people aged 19 to 25 who have a variety of complex needs including physical, learning and health needs. It is provided by Leeds City Council in partnership with Leeds City College. DAZL have had a 5 year partnership with VINE using dance as not only physical activity but to meet the educational outcomes of their individual learning programs. The dancers have been working with DAZL Dance Development Officer – Vicky Mawson and Assistant Chrisie Emmonds, they participant in dance once a week and the feedback from all the students/ support workers/ staff is that cheerdance program has improved the young dancers concentration and mobility. We are looking forward to the future and seeing how we can evolved this program We must say thank you to the wonderful Northern Ballet for inviting the group to perform and inspiring us all with such a fantastic program of dance. DAZL, Wayne Sables Summer – “4 Days, 4 Films, 1 Project”

4 Days, 4 Films, 1 Project DAZL have team up with Wayne Sables Project for a DAZLing Summer Film week 15th-18th August 2016. This project is supported by the Leeds City Council Inner South Community Committee & Leeds City Council Outer South Community Committee We will be creating a dance film each day for 4 days, 9am-3pm. This work will be showcased at the DAZL Show later in the year. Leeds Dance Partnership has a vision for Leeds to be an international centre of excellence for dance – a dancing city providing leadership in the North for the development of the art form locally, nationally and internationally. Leeds Dance Partnership Press release by Northern Ballet date Wed 13 Apr 2016 Earlier this week in Leeds, dance partners from across the city and the wider North region unveiled plans for the Leeds Dance Partnership at an event held at the Quarry Hill home of Northern Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre. Key stakeholders from across the region and industry were gathered together as exciting new plans were outlined that look set to put Leeds on the map as an international centre of excellence for dance. Mark Skipper DL, Chief Executive of Northern Ballet and Chair of the Partnership Steering Group explained: ‘The idea of a Leeds Dance Partnership first originated in a coming together of a number of organisations – Northern Ballet, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Yorkshire Dance, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, RJC, Balbir Singh Dance Company, DAZL and Leeds Beckett University, around a shared wish to raise the profile of the exceptional dance on offer in the city. In 2014 we became a City of Dance and we are now building on that collaboration to achieve an even greater step change in dance in the city.’ The evening set out the Partnership’s vision for Leeds to be an international centre of excellence for dance – a dancing city providing leadership in the North for the development of the art form locally, nationally and internationally. The partnership will be open to all members of the dance community, from major dance companies through to emerging independent artists, as well as other cross sector agencies with an interest and engagement in dance. It will be structured so that partners have real ownership and the ability to take an active role in driving activity forward. It is the intention of the partnership to create new resources and assets for the art form, develop more talent, create more great dance and develop artistic practice, increase access points for both participants and audiences and create more opportunities to attract the best in world class dance to Leeds. Chief Executive of the Arts Council, Darren Henley OBE said: ‘When it comes to dance, Leeds is a hotbed of creative and artistic excellence. The Arts Council invests in a range of dance organisations across the city and I’m looking forward to seeing how the Leeds Dance Partnership will develop dance here, offering more chances for dancers and audiences to become involved in this brilliant artform.’   In addition, Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council, gave her support for the initiative: ‘We are very fortunate to have several truly outstanding dance organisations in Leeds. DAZL Comp Teams Benefit Night April 2016   The DAZL Comp Teams hosted their competition benefit night (Dress Rehearsal) for all the community to come view there work prior to the competition in Blackpool on Sunday 1st May 2016.   Marie Mulvey (Parent) Loved watching gracie do her dances she loves to go to dance and thats all thanks to the amazing teachers Amy Dazl and Toni Allerton I cant thank you enough for all the hard work you have done gracie has gone from a very shy little girl to an extremely confident 3 year old in just a couple of months you guys are stars xx The 123 young dancers from Gipton, Richmond Hill, Seacroft, Ebor Gardens (East Leeds) Belle Isle, Rothwell, Middleton, Morley, Beeston, Hunslet (South Leeds) totaklly rocked we had a packed 200+ people supporting the young people and there achievements which is just fantastic. The Comp teams meet on various day all info can be found on our competitive dance page   Amazing result raising £635 last night so proud of all the DAZL Comp Teams not bad a 2 hour event – all staff, kids, parents and supporters we literally can’t thank you all enough 😀 ‪#‎WeLoveDAZL‬   New Member always welcome from 1st May 2016 – we do a Cheerdance and a Hip-Hop Competition each year plus many showcases and events.

DAZL Youth Company at Phoenix Dance Youth platform 2016 As part of Phoenix Dance commitment to provide performance opportunities and raise aspirations of young people,they hosted the Yorkshire Youth Platform at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre. Showcasing the very best in local, regional and national talent to present their work in a professional theatre environment to audiences of up to 230 guests. Yorkshire Youth Dance Platform platform celebrates youth dance across the Yorkshire region. Performers include Phoenix Youth Academy, Shahck Out Juniors (RJC Dance), Dance United Yorkshire Performance Company and DAZL Youth Dance Company. 412 Dance and Yorkshire Dance Youth to name a few. “We at DAZL want to say a massive thank you to Phoenix Dance for a fantastic event we all had a ball. It was so inspiring to perform with such talented groups from across the region “ The DAZL Youth Company performed are Dance and Health work  “NoFilter the Obsession with the Selfie” which has been touring around the Yorkshire Youth Platform circuit, choreographed by Vicky Mawson and Mason Jubb.

DAZL Youth Company at Yorkshire Dance’s #FRESH2016 This was the final stop for the DAZL Youth Company and the #NoFilter “Obsession with the Selfie Tour 2016” Choreography By Vicky Mawson & Mason Jubb Fresh is Yorkshire Dance annual showcase of high quality youth dance from across Yorkshire, and part of U.Dance, a national celebration of performance by young people. This year they recived 43 applications from every corner of Yorkshire, and our independent selection panel are delighted to announce the groups they’ve chosen to perform at CAST.     Groups selected to perform on the main stage Curve Dance Project Pulse Temple Moor Dance Company Seniors Yorkshire Dance Youth Phoenix Youth Academy Dance United Yorkshire Performance Company North Lindsey Dancers RJC Youth Dance Company DAZL Youth Company Stage 84 Momentum Dance Street Beat Elite Northern School of Contemporary Dance Centre for Advanced Training Groups selected for Fringe stage Hull Dance Youth Company Doncaster Youth Dance Company Rodillian Oakbank BTEC Dance Trio East Riding Youth Dance County Company Temple Moor Dance Company ReBuzz Me2 Inclusive Youth Dance Company Each year, companies from regional showcases like Fresh are selected to perform at the final U.Dance showcase, which takes place in a difference city every year. Two of these groups performing in Doncaster will be selected by an independent panel of judges to perform at U.Dance in Salford this July 2016.   Feedback from Yorkshire Dance was that the panel felt that the piece showed clear choreographic motifs or the ‘selfie’ theme throughout and had a great level of energy. The piece was performed with vigour and it really engaged the audience.  The panel noted that the dancers showed real commitment and gave 100% through their drive, passion and skill. We had a book and its was wonderful to see so much fantastic work happening across the region.Â
