Dance Action Zone Leeds (DAZL) is taking significant steps to address the climate crisis through its various sustainability initiatives. Recognizing the urgent need for action, DAZL has implemented several strategies to minimize its environmental footprint, demonstrating a commitment to both the community and the planet. One of the primary efforts includes reducing paper consumption by embracing digital solutions wherever feasible. This shift not only decreases waste but also promotes efficiency in communication and operations. Furthermore, DAZL actively combats plastic waste by encouraging participants in their community dance activities to utilize recycled and reusable water bottles, striving for a zero-plastic waste environment. This initiative is a part of their broader commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. At DAZL HQ, recycling is a key focus area, and the organization has established itself as a litter-picking hub for the South Leeds area. By partnering with Litter Free LS10, DAZL mobilizes local volunteers to engage in community clean-up efforts. They provide essential equipment, such as litter-picking tools, purple bags, and hi-vis vests, making it easier for community members to participate in these important activities. This initiative not only helps keep the environment clean but also fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility among residents.
In addition to these ongoing efforts, DAZL has also created an impactful artistic response to environmental issues through the project "Fighting for a Fair Future." This piece was developed for the #DAZL21 digital showcase in collaboration with Slanjayvah Danza and Artistic Director Jen Wren. The choreography serves as a poignant exploration of climate change, plastic waste, and pollution, effectively raising awareness about these critical issues.
Supported by the Leeds Culture Programmes, Leeds Public Health, and Arts Council England, this initiative involved dancers from the DAZL Bramley Youth Dance Group and was filmed in the picturesque Middleton Park Woods. The combination of artistic expression and community action exemplifies DAZL's holistic approach to tackling environmental challenges while engaging and educating the community.
