Please checkout two taster videos from the Kick Off Boys Project which is a partnership between DAZL, NSCD, Leeds City Collage and Phoenix Dance. Over the last half term we asked the lads if the following questions     Has the project made you think about dance in the future? What would you tell other boys about the project?   Part of this terms kick off boys project we look at mental health in young men. We have worked with Space 2 Leeds and Wayne Sables Project on some mental health anti-stigma work. From these workshops which have been supported by space 2 and big lottery we have created a new piece of work “Painted Face” We asked the lads – What have you learnt about mental health?   The documentary/ short film will be released the first week in July 2018 so stay tuned.

DAZL Annual Review 2017-18 Please click on the link here and download a copy of the DAZL Annual Review 2017-18  DAZL Annual Review 1718   This year DAZL improved the health & wellbeing of 4892 participants through dance and connecting with communities in 20 of the 33 Leeds City Council Wards including every major deprived ward in the city. This year DAZL engaged 3847 Girls and 1045 Boys participated in dance activities of which 3142 were inactive highlighting the importance of dance.   DAZL worked in partnership with 41 organisations and projects which supported the work and Co-lead on the “KICK Off Boys Partnership Project” bringing funds from awards 4 all and other organisations such as Wayne Sables, Space 2 along with the other partners NSCD, Leeds City Collage and Phoenix Dance. DAZL has worked with Rees Dance Company & Wayne Sables on a major dance project and will be seeking to develop this over the next year. Thank you to everyone who helped this year be a success.

The Morrison’s Foundation support DAZL

The Morrison’s Foundation support DAZL Health heARTS Project.   We are so grateful to have received support from The Morrison’s Foundation who support local charities making a positive difference in local communities across England, Scotland and Wales. DAZL has been awarded a grant for a health and wellbeing project “The DAZL Healthy heARTS Project”. The Project offers fun, relevant and accessible high quality dance and healthy eating opportunities. Targeted at disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people aged 3-25 years in Leeds 10 or close to the area of Morrison’s Hunslet store. Working within youth culture, starting with what young people, families enjoy. Also targeting children and families in deprived areas, who lack access to activities or are at risk of sedentary lifestyles. Using a community development methodology. Starting where the children and families are at! We have a commitment to supporting local people enabling and encouraging ownership and entrepreneurship. Parental involvement is a crucial feature of the project engaging the whole family to have the greatest impact to support a healthier lifestyle. The Program. We will deliver two dance and health eating project. They will both be a 12 week projects and in addition to this a one week school holiday activity program for children and families. We have a particular focus on looked After Children and those children who are struggling to maintain a healthy weight/ lifestyle. Digital resource and legacy of project. We will be working with the Wayne Sables Project to create a short film/ online resource addressing the themes of the project. This resource will be made avilable for groups to view and get inspiration to support their own health and wellbeing project. Thank you so much to the Morrison’s Foundation for their support. Co-Op Local Community Fund Backs DAZL Dance Action Zone Leeds has been chosen as one of six local charity from the Local Co-op Community Fund. Here is the link https://membership.coop.co.uk/causes/13760/ As a member, every time you shop at Co-op Beeston in Leeds, 1% of what you spend on selected own-brand products and services goes to the local community fund.   The money raised by all the members in the community, together with money from shopping bag sales, helps to fund local projects in the area where you live such as DAZL. Since September 2016, Co-op members have raised a total of more than £20 million. You can choose which cause you want your own 1% to go to. In Beeston, South Leeds we hope you chose DAZL to support our work with children and young people locally. Any money raised by members who don’t select a cause is added to the money raised from shopping bag sales and shared equally between the causes in their local area. How do we keep track of funds? Dance Fitness for Women & Teenage Girls This project is supported by Sport England and provides women and teenage girls in areas of deprivation from low socio-economic backgrounds across Leeds the opportunity to engage in dance fitness. We aim to increase participation and engage with 160 women throughout the year of this funding. Focusing on engaging inactive women and girls in a fun, inclusive and accessible way. The sessions will be appealing to women from all cultures as dance is so diverse. Sessions – All sessions are priced at £1 each and run weekly, each class will last a minimum of 1 hr in local community venues in the following areas; Belle Isle, Middleton, Ebor Gardens, Bramley, Wortley, Gipton. Why dance? Dance/ Dance Fitness such as Zumba, Cheer Fit, Dance Aerobics is proven to improve mood which improves mental health, dance also has a social element to it which alongside the activity motivates the people involved to live happier, healthier lives. Childcare a issue? Don’t worry we also have dance/ change 4 life sessions for young people 3 years and above. So we can keep the children occupied with healthy activities whilst you get active and take time for you! Kick Off Boys Project – Leeds Lads Dance Partnership

Kick Off Boys Project Dance is an energetic, physical activity that develops strength, coordination and courage. Kick Off is an all-male youth dance group in Leeds and we are looking for boys aged 12-18 to join. The weekly sessions will run once a week on Tuesdays 6pm – 7.30pm at Leeds City College Park Lane Campus. Each week you will work with other boys to improve your dance skills and to make pieces to be performed around Leeds. The Lads will work with dance professionals to choreograph and get the chance to show off your tricks and moves at venues across Leeds, including Riley Theatre, Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre and Morley Town Hall. Kick Off Boys Project covers the whole of Leeds. This project is run in partnership by Dance Action Zone Leeds (DAZL), Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Phoenix Dance Theatre, and Leeds City College.

NEW DAZL Dance Facilitator appointed

Congratulations on becoming the NEW DAZL Dance Facilitator Amy Dazl Amy has just been appointed as the DAZL Dance Facilitator after working for the organisation for the past 10 years in a freelance capacity. Amy has developed many youth dance programs and has played a major part in developing the DAZL International Championship winning cheerdance and hip-hop academies (DAZL Diamonds, DAZL Boys and DAZL Inspire). She will be responsible for the development of the DAZL Comp Teams with her team of artists. Amy will be working closely with the DAZL Youth Dance Leaders and Young Dance Leaders supporting their professional development and progression. Amy embodies the DAZL Model and we are so proud to have her on the team. Amy started dancing at 3 doing ballet, she joined DAZL when she was at high school and was assisted by DAZL in gaining her B-tec First and Level 3 National Diploma in Performing Arts from Thomas Danby Collage. Amy then went on to gain her Level 3 Dance Leaders Qualification with DAZL. She has taught and performed with the DAZL Diamonds since the squad began in 2005, her experience in cheerdance and winning major championships is amazing. Amy has delivered work in schools and community sessions and is passionate about competitive cheerdance, Amy is also NCSSE Qualified to Master Level. Today was her first day and we cant wait to see her development and that of the DAZL young people/ artists she works with #FutureDAZL
